Collection: Fishes From The Naturalist's Library

Sir William Jardine, 7th Baronet of Applegarth (1800–1874), was a Scottish naturalist, best known for editing The Naturalist's Library (1833–1843). This popular 40-volume series, published by his brother-in-law William Home Lizars, covered Ornithology, Mammalia, Entomology, and Ichthyology. The volumes featured contributions from prominent naturalists and illustrations by artists like Edward Lear. Jardine's work made natural history accessible to Victorian society. These hand-coloured illustrations are from his volume on Ichthyology.
