Collection: A History of British Birds

Rev. Francis O. Morris (1810–1893) was a prolific writer, best known for A History of British Birds. Published in monthly installments over seven years by Groombridge and Sons, it was printed by engraver Benjamin Fawcett, who also created the wood-block illustrations. The work was a financial and popular success, especially among amateur ornithologists and taxidermists, going through several editions. This first edition features hand-colored engravings with beige backgrounds and plate numbers beneath each bird's name.
