Collection: George Chinnery

George Chinnery was an English painter who spent much of his life in Asia, particularly India and southern China. He moved to Ireland in 1796, where he gained success and married Marianne Vigne in 1799. Chinnery returned to London in 1801, then sailed to Madras in 1802.

In India, he became the leading artist of the British community, working in Madras and Calcutta. His famous works include portraits of Colonel James Achilles Kirkpatrick and his controversial Indo-Iranian wife. Facing financial troubles, Chinnery relocated to southern China in 1825.
