Collection: Samuel John Peploe

Samuel John Peploe was a Scottish Post-Impressionist painter and a key member of the Scottish Colourists, alongside John Duncan Fergusson, Francis Cadell, and Leslie Hunter.

Born in Edinburgh in 1871, Peploe studied at the Royal Scottish Academy and later in Paris, where he was influenced by Rembrandt and Frans Hals. His trips to France and the Hebrides inspired his use of bold color and light in his landscapes.

In 1910, Peploe married Margaret MacKay and moved to Paris, focusing on still lifes and landscapes with a style influenced by Manet. After returning to Scotland in 1912, he held his own exhibitions. Throughout his career, Peploe was influenced by French artists like Cézanne, Matisse, and Van Gogh.

Peploe died in Edinburgh in 1935 and is buried in Dean Cemetery.
